The Minister for Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, and his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, held a telephone conversation this morning, upon request of the Iranian minister.

The political and social situation in Iran was a key topic of the conversation, during which Minister Amir-Abdollahian shared his authorities' assessment of the current domestic situation. MFA João Cravinho reiterated that the existence of Iranian legislation repressive to women's rights is at the basis of the recent events in that country and appealed to the Iranian authorities to give a positive signal in the promotion of women's rights.

Regarding the war in Ukraine, the Portuguese MFA emphasised his strong concerns about the recently reported evidence on the use of Iranian drones by the Russian Federation in Ukrainian territory. Minister João Gomes Cravinho stressed, in this context, the need for the Iranian authorities to ensure that this equipment is not supplied to Russia.

On the nuclear agreement with Tehran, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA), the Portuguese MFA reiterated the importance and urgency of reaching an agreement, encouraging the Iranian side to adopt confidence-building measures and to continue the dialogue with all parties, in particular with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

During this conversation, the Ministers also took stock of the bilateral relations, based on the cultural and historical ties between Portugal and Iran.
