Portugal signed yesterday, September 13th, an agreement with India on the recruitment of Indian citizens to work in our country.

This bilateral instrument will facilitate legal and safe labour migration flows between the two countries, establishing the procedures for admission of Indian citizens to work, under an employment contract, in Portugal. It will apply to the recruitment for any work activity and regardless of the duration of the employment contract, benefiting Indian workers with the same rights guaranteed by Portuguese law.

From the date of entry into force of the agreement, and whenever an employer wishes to hire an Indian worker, he must communicate this intention to the Institute of Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP), which will transmit it to Indian authorities. The latter will carry out a selection process, after which the employment contract will be signed, and the recruited worker will be granted a visa, thus allowing him/her to travel to our country and work here.

This labour mobility agreement was signed during the visit of the Indian Secretary of State of Foreign Affairs and Culture, having the Portuguese Secretary of State of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Francisco André, signed in representation of the Portuguese Part. The ratification process will now follow, and the instrument will enter into force 30 days after the last notification.
