Portugal wishes to mark the 17 July, the Day of International Criminal Justice, the day on which the Rome Statute was adopted.
Portugal fully supports the International Criminal Court, celebrating, this year, the 20th Anniversary of the entry into force of the Rome Statute.
Recent developments demonstrate the need to strengthen the ICC.
To this end, Portugal is fully committed to strengthening international criminal justice, in ensuring accountability for the most serious crimes of concern to the international community as a whole, supporting initiatives aiming to prevent international law violations, countering impunity, providing reparation and enabling reconciliation.
As State Party to the Rome Statute, Portugal abides by the general obligation of State Parties to cooperate with the ICC in its investigations and prosecution within its jurisdiction, maintaining an effective collaboration with all its organs.
