Diplomatic relations
- In February 1886 correspondence was sent from the Republic of South Africa as the Boer Minister presented his credentials in Lisbon.
- On January 1st 1923 a “Modus Vivendi” agreement was celebrated with the Union of South Africa to regulate the recruitment of Portuguese labor.
- On September 11th 1928 a Convention on the same subject was signed between Portugal and the Union of South Africa.
- On September 19th 1969 an agreement regarding the Cabora-Bassa project is signed in Lisbon with the Republic of South Africa.
- On April 29th 1974 the Republic of South Africa recognizes the new regime resulting from the Revolution.
- On May 2nd 1984 an agreement regarding the Cabora-Bassa project is signed in Cape Town between the governments of the Portuguese Republic, South Africa and Mozambique.
- On May 23rd 1997, an agreement on air transport is celebrated.
- On August 28th 2015 an agreement on scientific and technologic cooperation between Portugal and the Republic of South Africa is signed in Durban.
First diplomatic mission
- In September 1935 Luís Esteves Fernandes assumes the legation in Pretoria as chargé d’affaires.
