Date of recognition of the country: Unknown.
Date of establishment of diplomatic relations: Portugal established diplomatic relations with Ancient Persia in the 16th century, with the mutual sending of embassies and diplomatic embassies between the Portuguese crown and the Safavid dynasty. The attack of Ormuz in 1507, by Afonso de Albuquerque, marks the first contact between Portugal and Persia.
In 1513, the Portuguese Governor of India sent Miguel Ferreira and João Ferreira as Ambassadors to Persia, where they were received by the Shah Ismail.
First diplomatic mission: On October 15th, 1956, the Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary based in Ankara Luís Norton de Matos, presented his credentials as Non-resident Ambassador in Tehran.

Bilateral Agreements:
- On October 10th, 1993, the Financial Protocol between the Government of the Portuguese Republic and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran is signed in Tehran, establishing financial mechanisms to facilitate the economic activity and the establishment of commercial and business relations and cooperation between the two nations. The agreement sought to intensify and promote the balance in commercial exchanges between the two countries.
- On January 7th, 2003, the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Portuguese Republic, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran on Cooperation in Education, Culture, Science, Technology, Sports and Tourism, is signed in Lisbon.
- On June 18th, 2014, the Memorandum of Understanding between the Presidency of the Council of Ministers of the Portuguese Republic, and the Library and National Archives of the Islamic Republic of Iran on Cooperation in the fields of Historic and Patrimonial Documentation, Records and Archives, is signed in Lisbon.
- On June 18th, 2014, the Memorandum of Understanding between the Presidency of the Council of Ministers of the Portuguese Republic and the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance of the Islamic Republic of Iran on Culture, is signed in Lisbon.
- On January 26th, 2015, the Agreement for Cooperation between the Portuguese Republic and the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Fields of Language, Education, Culture, Sports, Youth, Tourism and Media, is signed in Tehran.
