Bilateral Relations:
Bilateral relations between Portugal and Hungary are good and the agenda for bilateral visits and meetings has been very dynamic. The mutual interest between the two peoples has intensified in recent years, confirmed by the significant increase in tourist flows in both directions, the success of student exchange programmes and the growing interest in cultural and artistic events that bring the two countries closer together. In this context, it is not surprising that the learning of the Portuguese language in Hungary is expanding, being already taught in seven secondary schools and in seven other higher education institutions. This interest in our language, and in the countries that speak it, resulted in Hungary becoming an Associate Observer of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), aiming to deepen its relationship with this community on a political, economic, and cultural level, and continuing to promote and spread the Portuguese language.
On the economic level, the bilateral relationship has grown at a sustained pace. In 2020, the Hungarian market represented Portugal's 25th commercial client and 18th supplier, with our country exporting 297 million EUR in goods and importing 474 million EUR from this market. For Hungary, Portugal was its 27th client and 39th supplier. The national companies with a direct presence in this market operate in areas as diverse as construction and engineering, telecommunications, consulting, financial services, cork, and textiles.
Hungary stands out by easy international trade, largely due to its privileged geographical location in the centre of Europe, so the Hungarian market may constitute one of the potential logistical centres for the distribution of Portuguese goods and services to other markets in the region. Portugal has been devoting special attention to the promotion of Portuguese exports in the agro-food, wine and household sectors, as well as to opportunities in the moulds sector.
