Diplomatic relations
- On June 24th, 1953, Portugal recognizes the Republic of Egypt
- On February 25th, 1958, Portugal recognizes the United Arab Republic
- On June 30th, 1963, diplomatic and consular ties are severed with the United Arab Republic
- On February 25th, 1975, when the Arab Republic of Egypt had already succeeded the United Arab Republic, diplomatic ties were reestablished
- On March 31st, 1981, an agreement on cultural, scientific and technical matters is signed in Cairo
- On March 20th, 1983, agreements for commercial purposes and for touristic cooperation are signed in Cairo
- On April 20th, 1993, a cooperation agreement on economic, industrial and technical and scientific issues is signed in Cairo
- On April 28th, 1999, in Cairo, a deal is signed between Portugal and Egypt for the promotion and reciprocal protection of investments
First diplomatic mission
- Under the decree-law number 32.413, dating November 24th, 1942, a Legation is created in Cairo, under the jurisdiction of Plenipotentiary Minister José Caetano d’Avila Lima, resident in Ankara
- On February 9th, 1960, José Weinholtz de Bivar Brandeiro presented his credentials as Ambassador in Cairo
