Diplomatic relations

  • Portugal has maintained relations on a consular level with Cuba since the beginning of the 19th century
  • Portugal has maintained diplomatic relations with Cuba since at least 1929, when the head of mission in Washington became accredited also in Cuba
  • On September 6th, 1938, a Portuguese-Cuban Treaty on commerce is signed in Havana
  • On June 26th, 1951, an agreement for the establishment of aerial services between and through both countries’ territories is signed in Lisbon
  • On July 8th, 1998, in Havana, Portugal and Cuba reach an agreement on the promotion and reciprocal protection of investment and on cultural cooperation
  • On October 30th, 2000, a convention is signed in Havana to avoid double taxation and to prevent tax evasion

First diplomatic mission

  • In 1931, the head of mission in Washington becomes accredited as a non-resident ambassador in Havana
